Flying High, part 2: Mon 16/2/2026

We made it into the US of A.

We were a bit concerned about being let in but no one looked at our ESTAs or phones.  Possibly going through all the easy  disabled gates with our own concierge helped.  Did not mention you-know-who once.

Nippon Air business class was not quite as good as Emirates but had a few great features. My favourite thing was the all the safety stuff featured Pokemons and lots of Pikachu. So cute i had to take photos.

It was very comfortable and the gluten free food was OK mostly.

Still no one really gets it. For one meal i received a butter but no bread. When i asked about my gluten free breadroll (to go with the butter obviously), they looked at me in surprise and said there was not a gluten free breadroll.  Another meal on a different leg of the trip, i received  2 gluten free breadrolls with no butter. Sigh but we carry on.

lunch, really nice poached chicken.Note the butter and empty bread roll plate.

dinner with a gluten free chicken sandwich in place of a missing breadroll. I smeared it with the @#$ butter.

my only gluten free dessert in the 4 legs of the trip.

.

Slight issue with the chocolate. Not sure whether it was gluten free. Finally a flight attendant googled it and said she was pretty sure it was gluten free.

It was chocolate so I ate it. (survived)

We were in a different kind of business class for our last leg from Japan to New York. It was like a cabin with drop down walls between the seats and on the aisles. Weird.

It was harder to get to our hotel than it was to get into the US of A.   We were an hour early for our booked taxi so had to contact the driver and rearrange.  Not easy. Anyway standing around in a dodgy part of JFK airport while waiting an hour for the taxi was less than fun. Stressful as the driver was not sure where we were and somehow expected us to direct him to the specific entrance of the airport???

However we eventually got to the hotel, the Sofitel, which is in a great spot and is nice, not amazing but a good location. Driving through the city at midnight was stunning.  Lights, cars, people and energy. We were greeted by a real life  doorman and lots of helpful people wanting to help with our luggage etc etc. I kept saying thank you nicely but remembered later the interest in TIPS. ooops.  Lucky Paul remembered to tip, more than necessary probably.

Looking forward to our first day in New York.......

We have had our first morning in New York in the Sofitel.
